Widely regarded as the home of Australian thoroughbred racing and the country’s sports and cultural capital, Melbourne is passion about horse racing. The city is most famous for the Group One $5.5 million Melbourne Cup – held annually on the first Tuesday of November, the Melbourne Cup is the world’s richest handicap race and unofficial staying championship. The Melbourne Cup is also the signature event of Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival, which is one of the biggest horse racing carnivals held anywhere. Other Spring Carnival feature races include the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, Victoria Derby, VRC Oaks and Emirates Stakes.

While thoroughbred racing usually takes centre stage in Melbourne, the city’s racing and betting enthusiasts are spoilt for choice. Melbourne also hosts world-class greyhound and harness racing and is the venue for the Australian Formula 1 motor racing event.

Melbourne Cup – Australia’s most famous horse race

Held at Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday of November each year and deemed “the race that stops a nation”, the $5.5 million Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most famous horse race and the most prestigious 2-mile handicap horse race in the world. Melbourne Cup Day attracts attendances exceeding 100,000 people and is a public holiday in metropolitan Melbourne; in fact the Melbourne Cup is the only horse race on the planet that has its own public holiday. Figures show that approximately 80-90% of Australians bet on the Melbourne Cup with over $100 million being wagered across Australia - around $50 million is bet on the Melbourne Cup in Victoria alone. Famous horses to win the Melbourne Cup include: Makybe Diva, Phar Lap, Archer, Peter Pan, Rain Lover and Think Big.
